TCC surf trip started with two options;
- take the day off work and casually saunter across to Wales at a leisurely pace in the sunshine and enjoy an afternoon at the beach
- work for a living and leave for Wales an enjoyable fish and trip supper. Take a slight detour into deepest darkest mid Wales (aka Scotland). Get lost in Abersoch and have to be rescued from the local nightclub carpark by a knight in shinning armour and pitch your tent in the dark.
I’d like to argue that the second option is much more exciting. The road trip is a crucial part of the weekend! Either way we all work up on Saturday morning keen to get to the beach, even if some were less keen to get in the sea.
AJ and John were first to show us how it’s done with AJ taking to his board and his dad to his boat. The rest of us set up camp amid James and Wade’s hi-tech beach shelters. Am I old enough to say when I was a lass we made do with windbreaks and mountains of towels to keep warm! Soon everyone was in the water and although the surf wasn’t massive the sun was out and an enjoyable time was had by all.
After a short break for lunch and general kit admiration some ventured back into the water while AJ and Daz got out the rest of their toys and showed off their kites. As the surf died down and the sun disappeared we headed back to camp and in true British style just as James got out his space age BBQ the heavens opened. Still not to fear, nothing will stop TCC having a BBQ so with all hands to the deck a BBQ shelter was constructed. Although some were sceptical of its structural integrity and more importantly its waterproofness, the BBQ could go ahead.
Once we were suitably full of sausages and burgers James bought out his bumper quiz. I learnt something new about James from this – his bed time reading consists of Mr Men books, the Argos catalogue and studying the family tree of Postman Pat. Obscure questions aside it was a close fought match right down to the tie break. However Team Scotland’s recent experience of the highlands proved vital, beating Team Barbie to the post as they correctly guessed how far it was to John O Groats.
Sunday unfortunately bought a day of calm seas so John, Catherine and I headed over to Mile End Mill to conveniently wash the sand out of our kit, paddle down rivers without drain bungs and drop boats onto car doors!
