Surfers Ear (Exostosis)

What is it?

Surfers ear is a condition which affects the ear canal. It is a bony growth that is formed when the ear canal is exposed to too much cold, especially cold water. It causes a loss of hearing, of course, but also water and debris can get trapped behind the growths and cause infections.

Prevention

Wearing a skull cap will keep some of the water out of your ears, and keeps your ears warm. If you expect your head to get wet a lot, then ear plugs would be more suitable.

Treatment

In early stages, antibiotics can stop the inflammation, but later, surgery is required to remove the growths.
